Fine Woodworking

"He to whom Nature begins to reveal her open secret will feel an irresistible yearning for her most worthy interpreter, Art." -Goethe

Whether on a riverbank or an ocean beach, almost everyone has admired the inherent beauty and mystery that is intrinsic to driftwood. It is the message-in-a-bottle mystique; how did it get there, where did it come from? It is this natural beauty and mystique that led me to driftwood as my sculpting medium. While the most basic earth elements of sun, wind and water shape driftwood beautifully it remains a static dead piece of wood. In my art I give driftwood new life by sculpting it to reveal its inner beauty and color thereby giving the piece motion, energy and movement.
I allow my carving to bring order and refinement to the vessel by creating a depth of field with rolling, flowing sight lines that invite the viewer to touch and sense the underlying beauty and warmth of the wood. The viewer is further drawn to the piece by the contrast between the natural rough surface created by sun, wind and water and satiny texture of the carved, ground, sanded surface. My pieces ask you to engage your senses; to appreciate the differences in texture and warmth, to observe the piece from different angles seeing the interplay of light with the hard edges and depth of cut sculpted into each piece.
These naturally inspired pieces are then combined with the finest floral reproductions available. A professional floral designer with over 25 years of experience adds the final touch to create what I call, "floral sculpture"
